TRAVIS SMITH

At Field-in-the-Eye

August 31 2026  Poetry

A tree.
   A tree.
And a    song
   bursts into
field.    With a
picture of
the wind    in it.
  And the    tree
getting closer.
  Behind the
fox.   In the
woods   beside the
glass.  In   the beyond
of the grass.
  You’re  in it   in
your eyes.   How we
make     echoes turn
    to hedgerows.  And a
tree.    And radios
tuned    to the moon.
  Behind the
notes   getting
   closer.   Cut grass
divided   by buzz.
   Gamma   hum and
delta   hum
to   the May
   degree. In   these
words   we’re in   field
with    together, in
  contingent
   life.    And the   song
in   the field inside
  the song in
your  eye.  A story we
  tell    named rain.
And   the tree
    comes again,   comes
again.
